Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) companies improve healthcare organizations’ revenue by optimizing the administrative and financial workflows from patient registration through complex payer communications to final payments from both payers and patients. The companies that perform comprehensive RCM services streamline verification of patient eligibility, creation and dispatch of patient payment estimates, processing of claims, billing, and recovery of accounts receivable, denials, and underpayments.

Sometimes, healthcare providers need support only with specific front- or back-end aspects of the revenue cycle. These providers seek RCM point solution providers that are often experts in a narrow issue. Implementing even some aspects of revenue cycle expertise and automation can aid providers in increasing net revenue, decreasing staff burden, and making workflows more efficient.

What is Viewgol revenue cycle management and what market does it serve?

Across the RCM vendor landscape, some provide software, others provide services, and still others provide software and services. Viewgol leverages both software and services. It relies on a team of outsourced, off-shore prior authorization, eligibility, claims, billing, and other specialists.

Viewgol’s software centers around analytics. It refines PM/EHR system data into strategic RCM insights with the most potential to enhance billing, revenue recovery, workflows, and financial outcomes. With data-driven insights unearthed by this analytics solution, its “Business Intelligence” and “Payer Science” teams manually create plans for rectifying revenue leakage, often assigning offshore specialists (prior authorization, eligibility, claims coding and A/R)  to help rectify these issues as needed. By synergizing their analytics software, RCM experts, and offshore specialists, they provide an end-to-end RCM solution.

In 2016, three revenue cycle executives launched Viewgol with the mission of helping practices use their data to find where they were leaking revenue. In late 2023, community healthcare solutions company CIPS acquired Viewgol to leverage Viewgol’s large offshore workforce. At that time, the smaller company was serving 38 customers in 15 states, including 20 different specialty practices.

A key Viewgol differentiator

Focused on analytics, Viewgol has not created specific automation software for the individual steps in front, back and mid-journey revenue cycle the way many RCM software companies do.  It either delivers its analytics results to the healthcare organization for their revenue cycle team to tackle or it proposes the manual services it can offer to bring each leakage point under control. This approach makes it unique in the RCM space.

Viewgol’s primary clients are practices, practice groups, and even MSOs. It has served many specialities, including urgent care, orthopedics, and family medicine.

Currently, Viewgol has just two reviews on G2 with an average rating of 4.5 / 5.

Viewgol’s revenue cycle management solutions

Viewgol has three products:

Viewgol Analytics: This software tool turns the data from your PM/EHR system into impactful RCM insights, tackling billing challenges, enhancing operational efficacy, and unveiling revenue recovery opportunities. The product reveals where your revenue leakage is occurring, but does not offer solutions or support in implementing solutions.

Viewgol Engage: While “engagement” in the RCM space typically refers to patient portals, registration, and scheduling, Viewgol’s Engage focuses on healthcare organization efficiency. Where the software delivers the RCM insights, Viewgol’s people work with your revenue cycle team to develop and execute specific solutions.

Viewgol Comprehensive:  This full-service solution is tailored to organizations that have neither the bandwidth nor the time to explore their revenue cycle breakdowns and how to rectify them. Unlike with Viewgol Engage the majority of post-analytics-results work gets executed on Viewgol’s end. Viewgol Comprehensive involves both software and specialists to identify sophisticated RCM dilemmas, and derive executive insights. Viewgol then generates the workflows that aim to enhance staff productivity and ensure payer accountability.

Although Viewgol provides a heavily supported RCM solution, many healthcare organizations prefer to rely on internal revenue cycle teams. Read more to determine whether its solutions can win the highest ROI for your organization.

Patient estimate and underpayment detection specialists

MD Clarity

Description

MD Clarity has been providing accurate, proven revenue cycle solutions for over 10 years. A social-impact-driven software company, MD Clarity serves progressive provider groups, health systems, and managed service organizations. MD Clarity knows that providers want their patients to access accurate pricing both upfront and throughout their journey. Greater transparency enhances both patient experience and provider revenue.

MD Clarity has worked with 3,000+ facilities and 150,000+ providers to deliver accurate patient pay and good faith estimates that comply with federal timelines and privacy regulations. These automated estimates have facilitated 20,000,000+ patient encounters across the United States. Its client base spans dozens of specialties. Recently, Built-In recognized it as a Best Place to Work. G2 reviewers have given MD Clarity an average of 4.7 / 5 stars.

MD Clarity features in common with Viewgol

While MD Clarity and Viewgol both optimize the healthcare revenue cycle via front- and back-end administrative improvements, they have distinct approaches.

Viewgol’s software focuses mostly on analytics. Once the analytics brings in the insights, Viewgol either turns the results over to its client’s RCM team or directs its own team of revenue cycle professionals – whether experienced directors and/ or specialists in prior authorization, eligibility, claims, or coding – to create the workflows to solve the points of revenue leakage.

MD Clarity’s business model, on the other hand, leverages its software to automatically conduct key steps in the revenue cycle. Using software automation gets key RCM tasks completed at a fraction of the price of using outside RCM experts and off-shore specialists conducting work manually. When a physician group or MSO already has revenue cycle management professionals in place, they often only then the expertise and automation packed into a software solution to improve accuracy and productivity. .

RCM point solutions that unlock revenue

Patient payment or good faith estimates

Viewgol does not have software engineered to address the patient payment estimate issue. It can offer specialists to generate these estimates manually.

MD Clarity excels in streamlining and automating the entire process of providing patient pay estimates. Its Clarity Flow system automatically runs eligibility checks, creates customized estimate letters tailored to various patient groups, dispatches estimates when appointments are booked, manages care deposit collections if necessary, and ensures the seamless transfer of collected funds to your organization’s account. With all steps executed via software, neither internal nor external employees are needed in the vast majority of cases. Should there be an estimate considered an “exception,” MD Clarity automatically forwards to the provider for manual processing. Typically, just a handful of estimates need manual processing in any month.

This level of eligibility and estimate automation not only reduces the need for repetitive tasks among staff but also helps in curbing the necessity for additional hires, significantly easing the operational burden on healthcare organizations.

Contract management

Given burdensome workloads, providers struggle to keep up with contracts.  A recent MGMA poll found that 33 percent of providers fail to review their contracts yearly and 17 percent report NEVER reviewing them. We’ve worked with clients who haven’t reviewed their contracts for five years or more.

Contract management vendors centralize and digitize contracts, updating them with changes from payers as those come in. Contract awareness is critical because payers often underpay providers. Worse, they create new changes without giving providers the chance to approve. Most concerning, you bet payers’ new terms and fees benefit them and not you.

Underpayments: Due to the labor involved in tracking and addressing them, underpayments are often overlooked. Both Viewgol and MD Clarity use their contract management modules to uncover payer underpayments. MD Clarity’s tool RevFind, compares all actual payments to those listed in payer contracts and alerts staff to discrepancies, measures contract performance and analyzes denials. Rather than depending on outside specialists, your staff can explore your payers’ Provider Relations, or Provider Resources portal to find how to report the underpayments revealed by the software. They should have a protocol. This straightforward fix doesn’t always require the involvement of pricy specialists.

Automated underpayment discovery works in real time and continually alerts providers to the trends that amount to significant revenue recovery. RevFind also helps ensure you’ve set your chargemaster optimally. Its work queues feature assigns appeals and investigations to a range of team members automatically per your settings so users can review their task statuses in one place. These features centralize work progress.

Finally, once RevFind digitizes and parses all the terms and fees from your many payers, it generates contract performance reports. This competitive intelligence helps you negotiate better fees and contract terms.

Denials Management: RevFind identifies the origins and categories of denials faced by your organization, enabling you to address the underlying issues and refine processes to avoid future denials. Its detailed reports reveal the specific codes and payers responsible for these denials, aiding your team in pinpointing and resolving the factors leading to revenue losses.

An API-forward Viewgol competitor

Change Healthcare / Optum

Description

For over a decade, Change Healthcare operated as an independent entity within the healthcare sector before being acquired by United Healthcare in 2022, subsequently integrating into Optum, its partner organization. Change Healthcare is recognized for its extensive range of revenue cycle management (RCM) solutions, catering to a diverse client base that includes specialty physician groups, hospitals, and healthcare systems. Its offerings include:

  • RCM analytics that utilize data to pinpoint trends and improvement opportunities
  • Self-service clearinghouses that streamline the claims processing workflow
  • Tools aimed at ensuring healthcare services are accurately compensated, thus securing proper reimbursement

In addition to its software, Change employs an API platform. This platform consists of rules and protocols enabling various software applications to interact. APIs facilitate the integration of different systems, allowing them to exchange data and functions smoothly. This capability enables developers to use existing services and platforms to create new applications or enhance existing ones, without building from the ground up. APIs serve as conduits between systems, ensuring their interoperability.

Beyond its software, Change provides specialist services in billing, prior authorizations, charge capture, and more, adopting a dual approach to address revenue cycle challenges faced by healthcare organizations. This "software plus services" model ensures comprehensive coverage for all patients, including handling "exceptions" not processed by the software.

Change Healthcare and Viewgol overlap

Similar to Trizetto, Viewgol and Change Healthcare both offer technology and services for eligibility verification, coding, billing, contract management, and analytics. However, Viewgol does not provide several services that Change does, including patient pay estimators, Clinical Decision Support Mechanisms (CDSM), charge capture, and analytics-driven claims management.

Additionally, both companies also provide consulting and advisory services to their clients.

Ratings

Change Healthcare and Optum both have scores of 3.7/5 stars on G2.
