When to use ICD code F12.288

1. Evidence of a maladaptive pattern of cannabis use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by at least three of the following within a 12-month period: tolerance, withdrawal, using larger amounts or over a longer period than intended, persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down, significant time spent obtaining, using, or recovering from cannabis, reduction in important activities, continued use despite knowledge of physical or psychological problems.

2. Presence of a cannabis-induced disorder other than intoxication or withdrawal (such as cannabis-induced psychotic disorder, anxiety disorder, mood disorder, or sleep disorder) that is temporally related to cannabis use.

3. Symptoms of the cannabis-induced disorder developed during or soon after cannabis use.

4. The cannabis-induced disorder causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

5. The symptoms are not better explained by an independent mental disorder (i.e., the symptoms predated cannabis use or persisted for a substantial period after cessation of use).

6. The disorder is not due to a general medical condition and is not better accounted for by another substance.
